Smart Car - One geared motor one direction only

So everything else works perfectly.
Except the motorA connected to the provided motor shield only drives in one direction...
the other motor works fine(MotorB), back and forth with joystick U1

but the same joystick for motorA whether the joystick is up or down only moves the motor backwards. not forwards.

I've double checked my wiring, I've tried different variants of motor positions. The wires are soldered correctly to the motor.
But MotorA doesn't want to go backwards with the joystick :/ please help
